Level 2 & 3 Technical Occupational Entry in Fitness Coaching & Personal Training
What does this qualification cover?
At Next Phase Academy, we provide a complete progression route into the fitness industry through Active IQ’s nationally recognised qualifications. Students can start with the Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Coaching and advance onto the Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training, gaining the skills, knowledge, and confidence to begin a professional career in fitness.
Entry Requirements include:
- Some experience of gym-based exercises, including free weights, is highly recommended.
- The course requires physical exertion and individual participation is essential; therefore, a degree of physical fitness is necessary.
- There is also an element of communication (discussing, presenting, reading and writing) involved and learners should have basic skills in communication pitched at level 2.
Level 2 Technical Occupation Entry in Fitness Coaching (Certificate)
This is the starting point for anyone wanting to work in health, fitness or sport. You’ll learn to:
- Understand anatomy, physiology, and nutrition basics.
- Plan and deliver safe, effective gym-based sessions.
- Lead small group fitness classes.
- Support clients to build healthy, active lifestyles.
- Develop professional behaviours and customer service skills.
Learners must complete the eight mandatory units below through a multiple of knowledge assessments, case studies, observations and assignments.
- Anatomy and physiology.
- Principles of fitness training.
- Principles of nutrition and lifestyle.
- Health & safety in a fitness environment.
- Professionalism and customer care.
- Conducting client consultations.
- Planning and delivering fitness sessions.
Level 3 Technical Occupation Entry in Personal Training (Diploma)
This qualification builds on Level 2 and prepares you to work independently as a Personal Trainer. You’ll learn to:
- Design tailored programmes for individual clients.
- Deliver one-to-one and small group PT sessions.
- Apply advanced knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and nutrition.
- Support behaviour change and long-term client goals.
- Gain business skills in marketing, sales, and client retention.
Learners must complete the six mandatory units below through a multiple of knowledge assessments, case studies, observations and assignments.

- Understanding lifestyle, wellbeing and common medical conditions.
- Encouraging positive health and fitness behaviours.
- Programme design and delivery for personal training.
- Professionalism and business acumen for personal trainers.
What could this qualification lead to?
A career as a Fitness Coach and/or Personal Trainer
This qualification also provides progression onto:

Employment as a Personal Trainer (gym or freelance).
- Specialist Level 3 & 4 awards (e.g. exercise for special populations).
- Further qualifications such as Sports Massage Therapy.
- Opportunities to build your own PT business.
- Apprenticeship in Personal Training.
Year 14 Students will also have the opportunity to complete, or continue, sport specific coaching awards and CPDs
